Is front-end web development a good career in 2023?

2023. April 15.

I am a front-end developer with 8 years behind me. I’ve also worked for 2 years in a backend developer position too. I did some client works, I did my own projects, but mostly I worked at companies as an employee.

Here’s my take.

Front-end development is still going strong in 2023. The web is still growing like crazy. Look at any of your favorite apps, and you’ll see that most of them have web applications too. Furthermore, with the appearances of NativeScript, Capacitor and React Native, there’s an ongoing trend of writing your mobile apps using front-end technologies.

It’s a career with a wide future perspective. You can expand your repertoire and learn about backend development and become a full-stack developer. You can learn cloud infrastructure too. You can learn DevOps. Each option is a great extension of your front-end development skills.

But it’s not just that.

It also gives you the opportunity to have a lifestyle of your choice. You can work at a corporation for safety and a good paycheck. You can freelance and have your own clients if you want to. You can become an expert in your field and do consultancy. Give talks, and write blog posts. You can create courses. You can teach because private software schools grow like mushrooms. Hell, you can even make your own projects and found a startup.

In my opinion, it’s also the most responsive form of software development. Requires way less setup than mobile app development, and you’ll see the result of your work instantly. It’s also much easier and more independent to publish your web apps than to publish your mobile apps.

It’s very satisfying to begin. The result of your work is not just a number in the console, but an interface with buttons and animations. For me, this made it way more fun.

So yeah, front-end development is an amazing career choice. Go for it.
